What Is a Longevity Cake?
The Peach, the Crane and the Noodle
A longevity cake is built around symbols that have carried the same wish for generations. The peach (寿桃) is the most recognised of these, standing for long life, which is why the shou tao shape appears in most designs as a sculpted centrepiece or a fondant detail.
The crane (鹤) carries the same meaning and pairs especially well with gold fondant for a more formal finish. Longevity noodles (长寿面) are more commonly part of the dinner than the cake itself, but some designs draw on the motif as a decorative touch, keeping the full set of traditional symbols together.
You can read more about the significance of longevity cakes in our guide to what each symbol means.
When a Longevity Cake Is Ordered
Longevity cakes are ordered for milestone birthdays, typically from the 60th onwards, though 70th and 80th celebrations are the most common occasion. They're traditionally a gift from the younger generation to an elder, and they tend to sit at the centre of a family dinner where the whole gathering takes part.
Longevity Cake Designs
Shou Tao Peach Cakes
The shou tao peach cake (寿桃) is the most traditional longevity birthday design, shaped and coloured in the classic pink and green of the ripened peach. Our longevity peach cake range includes designs with red bean paste or lotus filling for elders who prefer a lighter, more familiar sweetness.
Gold Fondant Finishes
Gold fondant and gold leaf finishes are a popular choice for 70th and 80th birthdays, where the symbolism of prosperity runs through every detail of the occasion. Our designs pair gold leaf with pink blossoms and auspicious characters for a finish that is festive and elegant at once.
Dragon and Crane Designs
Dragon and crane designs carry the same longevity wishes in a bolder, more formal register, and they're often chosen by families who want something striking for a large dinner. These are among the more detailed builds in our menu of longevity cakes and are best planned with a little extra lead time.
Larger Cakes
For big family gatherings, our two-tier longevity cakes come in four sizes: a 4"+6" (12 to 20 pax), a 5"+7" (25 to 32 pax), a 6"+8" (35 to 45 pax) and an 8"+10" (50 to 65 pax), with some designs also available in three tiers. You can also add money pulling cakes as a surprise feature for an extra moment on the night.
Choosing a Longevity Cake by Milestone
The right design typically shifts with the milestone, from the fondant number and the level of detail to the size of the cake. Here's how families usually approach each occasion:
60
60th birthday
A shou tao peach cake with a fondant "60" is the most traditional starting point, and a single-tier 6" cake (8 to 15 pax) suits a smaller family dinner well.
70
70th birthday
Larger gatherings are common at this milestone, which makes a two-tier design with deeper gold fondant detailing the natural step up.
80
80th birthday
The most elaborate gold leaf finishes and crane designs suit this occasion, and a 6"+8" or 8"+10" two-tier cake handles bigger guest lists.
90
90th birthday
This milestone number tends to take centre stage, framed by the traditional symbols that have run through every celebration before it.

How Pricing and Lead Time Work
Every longevity cake from My Bake Studio is priced on the skilled hours the design takes, not the size of the cake. A few things are worth knowing before you enquire:
1
Design drives the price
A hand-sculpted fondant design takes longer to build than a buttercream one and is priced accordingly, while cake weight is only a small factor.
2
Reference images are welcome
We'll quote on the work required to recreate your design by hand, since even something that looks simple on screen can carry a great deal of detail.
3
Lead time
Our longevity cakes are made to order, with a minimum lead time of three days. Elaborate designs such as sculpted 3D cakes or tiered cakes may need a little longer, so we recommend getting in touch early to secure your preferred date.
